DSL was seeking a solution that would extend the jetty’s 25-year life span. The wooden decking needed to be replaced, as it was no longer a viable option. After a comprehensive evaluation, fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) panels were chosen, which were lighter in weight, with superior strength to wood, and would meet the required 25-year lifespan.
To meet RoadTek’s specific criteria, PPG Protective & Marine Coatings (PPG) proposed the PSX 700 coating system, which has a 20-year track record, as the ideal solution.The PSX 700 coating system proposed for this project comprised: SIGMAZINC™ 109HS high-solids, zinc-rich epoxy primer; AMERLOCK® 400 MIO high-solids, micaceous iron oxide coating; PSX 700 engineered polysiloxane coating.
PPG Protective & Marine Coatings proposed and supplied the anticorrosive and fire protective coating system for all externally and internally exposed steelwork. A combination of SIGMAFAST™ 302, SIGMACOVER™ 435, SIGMACOVER™ 456 HS and SIGMADUR™ 520 coatings were applied to the steel structures in order to provide a high level of protection. For the required fire protection, a full three-coat fire system was used to meet the environmental conditions.
PPG Protective & Marine Coatings worked with the steel contractor, International Metal Works (IMW) to secure the project. About 3,000 tons of steel was protected with cementitious material, with the rest needing a thin-film intumescent coating because of the building’s visual appearance. PPG supplied the complete fire protection system for the project including the primer and STEELGUARD 2458 topcoat as well as the fire protection product.
The coatings contractor chose PPG Protective & Marine Coating’s option using the STEELGUARD FM 585 water-based intumescent coating for this challenging project. Its ease of application, the absence of solvents in the atmosphere while work was ongoing (so there was no disturbance to the adjoining areas and no effect on passengers) and its competitive thickness were decisive.
PPG provided a robust, competitive protective solution for this new-build project with the SIGMAFAST 278 system. Its innovative phenalkamine technology, low VOC content and two-layer application were major factors in the customer’s decision. The economical and efficient coating is easy to apply with airless equipment and produces excellent fast-drying times, being touch-dry after 1 hour and ready for overcoating after 2 hours, resulting in a quicker application process.
