PPG SIGMAGLIDE® 990: Neptune Lines, Piraeus, Greece

Neptune Lines

Neptune Lines confirms significant fuel savings

The Customer

Neptune Lines, the Greek owner of the M/V Neptune Okeanis, is a key player in the Mediterranean car carrier market with an integrated logistics network. This particular vessel trades in the Mediterranean and Black Sea areas, and is therefore exposed to aggressive fouling.

The Challenge

The key task was to ensure long-lasting protection against fouling, with the benefit of reduced fuel consumption and minimize both GHG emissions and operational costs.

The critical problem for today’s owners and operators is that choosing a conventional antifouling system will result in an increase in fouling and therefore friction, which will lead to higher fuel consumption. Once again, PPG Protective & Marine Coatings (PPG) provides the optimal solution.

The Solution

The Biocide-free Solution to Rising Energy Costs

Fuel costs are a growing burden for the shipping industry. At PPG, we anticipated this trend and engineered the most advanced pure silicone fouling release system: the PPG SIGMAGLIDE 990 coating.

The Customer

Neptune Lines

The Location

Piraeus, Greece

The Challenge

To deliver fuel savings through outstanding fouling release performance.

The Solution

The SIGMAGLIDE 990 pure silicone system.

The Benefits

Fuel and maintenance cost savings.

The Result

The SIGMAGLIDE system delivers consistent fuel savings.

This innovative system is formulated to help owners and operators save fuel costs, while at the same time improve their environmental footprint by reducing green house gas (GHG) emissions and help them to achieve a biocide-free operation.

The PPG SIGMAGLIDE 990 biocide-free coating has proven superior fouling release and fuel savings performance. Therefore, the decision was made to replace the original conventional antifouling system with the PPG SIGMAGLIDE 990 system in September 2010.

The Benefits

Neptune Lines

On this project, the advanced silicone PPG SIGMAGLIDE 990 coating delivered extremely low surface energy, providing a smoother surface profile and fouling resistance, thereby significantly reducing the frictional resistance.

The performance of the system was immediately confirmed as fuel savings were realized from the vessel’s first voyage and the owner has reported the same level of savings throughout the vessel’s working life to date.

Proven Savings for Owners and Operators

In these competitive economic times, owners and operators are looking to combine enhanced productivity, environmental compliance and reduced costs. This is why Greek owners, always at the forefront of the shipping trends, choose the PPG SIGMAGLIDE 990 system for their fleets to deliver the best performance available today.

Owners across the globe are responding to the high level of confirmed fuel savings with more than 300 vessels worldwide currently benefiting from the unique solution provided by the PPG SIGMAGLIDE system.

Further benefits of PPG SIGMAGLIDE 990 include:

Neptune Lines

M/V Neptune AEGLI after application of the PPG SIGMAGLIDE 990 coating

  • Reduced fuel consumption
  • Reduced GHG emissions
  • Reduced maintenance work at next routine dry docking
  • A long-lasting, easy to maintain anticorrosive and fouling release system
  • Efficient dry docking reducing out-of-service time
  • Quicker return on investment

The Result

The main engine consumption of the M/V Neptune Okeanis was monitored very carefully. The Technical Manager of Neptune Lines commented: “After application of the PPG SIGMAGLIDE 990 system, we recorded that the main engine fuel consumption per nautical mile travelled was reduced by 8% at the same average speed of the vessel.”

This good performance has continued – proof of the system’s superior durability, effectiveness and consistent fuel savings. The owners were delighted with such a significant saving on their operational costs. Consequently, as a direct result of the superb performance experienced with the M/V Neptune Okeanis, a second vessel – the M/V Neptune Aegli – was coated with the PPG SIGMAGLIDE 990 system in August 2012.

Antifouling / fouling release

Antifouling / fouling release

In today’s market, there are so many antifouling products that choosing the right one can become a burden. At PPG, we looked at this issue from a customer’s point of view and decided to upgrade our antifouling product offer to provide both relevant products and simplicity of choice.
