Euler program 2016 graduates

ROLLE, Switzerland, June 21, 2016 – PPG (NYSE:PPG), which has its Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) regional headquarters in Rolle, Switzerland, recently celebrated the graduation of five students from the Euler Course at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and marked the end of its first year as an official sponsor of the program. The course gives high-potential mathematics students in Switzerland an opportunity to cultivate their talent by taking special mathematics classes at the school.

The Euler program was founded in 2008 by Kathryn Hess Bellwald, mathematics professor and researcher at EPFL, inspired by 18th-century Swiss mathematician and physicist Leonhard Euler and modelled on a program started at Johns Hopkins University in the United States. About 20 students are selected to participate in the program each year from about 300 who take the entrance exam. Participating students dedicate every Wednesday afternoon during the school year for six years to mathematics study in the program. Three of this year’s Euler graduates are going on to study at EPFL.

As an official sponsor of the program, PPG provides financial support to help inspire the next generation of scientists, mathematicians and engineers.

“We congratulate and admire this group of five talented students who have demonstrated tremendous commitment and personal investment to achieve their certificate," said Jérôme Zamblera, PPG general manager, automotive refinish, EMEA, who attended the ceremony. "Dedication is a core value at PPG and one of the reasons why we chose to partner with the Euler program. These students have worked hard and have a very bright future ahead.

"At PPG, we recognize the need for a skilled workforce in R&D, manufacturing, IT and other careers related to science and maths. To meet this demand, PPG actively invests in the next generation," he continued. "Through this partnership with EPFL, we are both investing in the future of our company and our industry, whilst associating PPG with excellence.”

Since PPG moved its European headquarters about 10 years ago to Rolle, not far from the EPFL campus, the business has developed a strong relationship with the school. Because innovation and research are at the heart of PPG’s business, the company embraces collaboration with organizations such as EPFL. In addition to the Euler program sponsorship, PPG also launched and finances a research-and-development program with EPFL on micro-encapsulation.

Speaking about the collaboration, Jean-Marie Greindl, PPG senior vice president, global architectural coatings, and president, PPG EMEA, said, “Perhaps some of the Euler or EPFL students will work one day for PPG, or contribute to the development of a new product or technology in our industry. We are in any case very pleased to interact with the local community in Switzerland and have an impact on its future.”

PPG and the PPG Foundation aim to bring color and brightness to PPG communities around the world. We donated more than $7.8 million in 2015 to hundreds of community organizations across 20 countries. By investing in educational opportunities, we help grow today’s skilled workforce and develop tomorrow’s innovators in industries related to coatings and specialty materials. Plus, we empower PPG employees to make an impact for causes that are important to them by supporting their volunteer efforts and charitable giving.
