Robust fire and corrosion protection for offshore EPC modules

The Customer

NCOC is the operator of the giant Kashagan offshore oilfield located in the northern part of the Caspian Sea.

In June 2015, the North Caspian Operating Company N.V. (NCOC N.V.) was appointed as the single operator under the North Caspian Sea Production Sharing Agreement (NCSPSA). Assets within the 5,600 km2 NCSPSA contract area include the giant Kashagan field, one of the largest petroleum developments in the world. Other assets include the Kalamkas, Aktoty and Kairan fields.

The Challenge

The customer had two essential requirements for the two offshore EPC modules 2 and 3. Firstly, we had to offer a wide range of protective coatings, including PFP, in this aggressive offshore environment. Secondly, we had to provide local technical and supply chain support with compliance to international standards and specifications.

After a comprehensive examination of the customer's requirements, we proposed a solution that comprised the following products for the two offshore modules:

These advanced coatings ensured that the offshore modules received optimal protection against heavy corrosion, abrasion and impact, along with ultimate protection for hydrocarbon hazards: explosions, impacts, fires, and cryogenic spills


The Result

Our robust, long-lasting system will protect the customer's offshore modules for many years

In total, we supplied over 100,000 liters to cover an area of over 40,000 m2 for the two offshore modules.

The PPG SIGMASHIELD 460 epoxy coating was applied in a three-coat system with PPG SIGMACOVER 280 primer and the PPG SIGMADUR 520 polyurethane finish for all the main steel structures (frame, beams, columns etc.).

The PPG PITT-CHAR XP intumescent coating was applied to the blast wall section to protect the Local Equipment Room from fire and will provide Jet Fire protection for 30 minutes.

The PPG SIGMASHIELD 460 two-component, high-solids, glass-flake, reinforced polyamine adduct epoxy coating is the perfect long-term solution for areas subject to constant, damaging impact.

The PPG PITT-CHAR XP epoxy intumescent single coating is the ultimate solution for extreme hydrocarbon hazards, such as explosions, impacts, fires, and cryogenic spills. Its unique flexibility prevents cracking and delivers superior fire protection by forming an insulating char upon exposure to high heat. This ensures the structural steel's integrity for an extended period of time, allowing workers to evacuate the structure safely in case of fire or explosion.

A crucial factor in using our PPG PITT-CHAR XP coating was its proven ability to withstand thermal expansion from cold to hot climate conditions without cracking. Additional advantages for the customer were the coating's durability and its ability to remain free from damage during transportation, assembly and commissioning.
