PITT-CHAR® XP - Passive protection against hydrocarbon hazards

PFP (Passive Fire Protection) coatings are used extensively throughout the oil, gas and petrochemical industries to protect safety critical structures and equipment from the ever present threat of hydrocarbon hazards such as spills, explosions and fires.

PPG's PITT-CHAR XP system is uniquely suited to protection against such hazards. Based on flexible epoxy intumescent technology, this type of coating is designed to expand upon exposure to heat into an insulating protective char. This prevents steel from heating up rapidly and delays the loss of load-bearing capacity and integrity – buying crucial time for personnel to escape and limiting asset and environmental damage.

PITT-CHAR XP's robust yet flexible characteristics allows it to react with the ductility of steel eliminating the risk of cracking and delamination during construction, transportation and life of asset, ensuring protection when it matters. This same patented technology allow PITT-CHAR XP to be effective against extreme cold of arctic conditions and even resistant to cryogenic spills such as LNG and liquid nitrogen.

The PITT-CHAR XP coating is PPG’s solvent-free epoxy intumescent coating, which provides excellent protection against intense hydrocarbon pool and jet fires.

An extremely robust coating, its unique flexibility protects steel against mechanical abuse and ensures intact fire protection after explosive incidents that often coincide with petrochemical hydrocarbon fires.

It is trusted worldwide to provide the most durable protection against solvents, acids, alkalis, salts and abrasion, while retaining its advanced fire and corrosion protection properties.

All this makes the PITT-CHAR XP coating the ideal PFP choice for harsh weather conditions, chemical environments, and virtually any hostile industrial situation.

Independent certification and international approval

The PITT-CHAR XP coating has been extensively tested and proven to withstand fires, explosions and environmental exposure and proven to withstand fires, explosions and environmental exposure and has comprehensive approval certification for hydrocarbon pool and jet fires from recognized authorities including ABS (American Bureau of Shipping), BV (Bureau Veritas), DNV (Det Norske Veritas), Lloyd’s Register, Russian Maritime Register of Shipping, UL (Underwriters Laboratories) and GASAFE.

Surfaces were prepared by abrasive blasting to Sa2 according to ISO 8501-1. A layer of SIGMACOVER 522 primer was applied to 75-100 microns (3-4 mils). FOAMGLAS® was installed to insulate and protect the tank against temperatures of -170°C/-274°F due to the propane gas storage. For fire protection, the legs and sphere were covered with PITT-CHAR XP. An artistic finish was painted using SIGMADUR 1800 at a thickness of 80 microns (3.1 mils).

Using plural-airless spray equipment, the first layer of PITT-CHAR XP epoxy intumescent coating was applied and steel mesh reinforcement was installed on the flange tips to the UL 1709 2-hour fire rating. A second layer of the PITT-CHAR XP coating was applied over the mesh and rolled to an aesthetic finish. Lastly, a layer of urethane topcoat was applied to protect the coating system from high humidity and sunlight in the coastal region of Columbia where the refinery is located.
