The PPG STEELGUARD intumescent coatings are specially formulated to provide that vital extra time needed to help people escape and also allow fire fighters to save the building itself.

Intumescent coatings work by expanding at high temperatures, from a very thin, lightweight coating, into a thick, foam-like layer that insulates the steel from the fire and it is this insulation that maintains the steel’s stability.

The PPG STEELGUARD range offers a complete set of fit-for-purpose solutions suited to various grades of fire protection, climatic exposure conditions and application techniques. They are trusted to protect a wide range of large, high-traffic civil buildings around the world, including shopping centers, airport terminals, sports stadia and schools.

As well as providing superb fire protection, PPG STEELGUARD intumescent coatings also produce an extremely smooth surface, which can be topcoated in many colors to match the aesthetics of these buildings.

Environmental adherence

The PPG STEELGUARD range also includes waterborne intumescent coatings that have been specifically designed for onsite use. These products comply with the most stringent environmental regulations, enabling applications to take place in working areas even while people are using the building.

In combination with suitable PPG topcoats, the range provides high levels of corrosion protection against a wide variety of atmospheric conditions.

Independent certification and international approval

PPG STEELGUARD products have been tested to various standards, such as EN 13381-8 (EU), BS 476-20/21 (UK) and GB 14907 (China), and are certified in many countries around the globe. They are proven to provide up to 150 minutes of fire protection.

Each product undergoes a rigorous and exhaustive testing process. In addition, every production batch is thoroughly checked so you can be assured of consistent quality and accurate fire protection levels at all times.

Engineering support

Our engineers are fully trained in intumescent fire protection and are up to date with all relevant industry standards and fire ratings. They also have the engineering capability to help customers from the early stages of development, guiding you through the specification process and providing continuing support right through to project completion and beyond.

The coatings contractor chose PPG Protective & Marine Coating’s (PPG) option using the PPG STEELGUARD FM 585 water-based intumescent coating for this challenging project. Its ease of application, the absence of solvents in the atmosphere while work was ongoing (so there was no disturbance to the adjoining areas and no effect on passengers) and its competitive thickness were decisive.

PPG Protective & Marine Coatings (PPG) worked with the steel contractor, International Metal Works (IMW) to secure the project. About 3,000 tons of steel was protected with cementitious material, with the rest needing a thin-film intumescent coating because of the building’s visual appearance. PPG supplied the complete fire protection system for the project including the primer and PPG STEELGUARD 2458 topcoat as well as the fire protection product.

PPG Protective & Marine Coatings proposed and supplied the anticorrosive and fire protective coating system for all externally and internally exposed steelwork. A combination of PPG SIGMAFAST 302, PPG SIGMACOVER 435, PPG SIGMACOVER 456 HS and PPG SIGMADUR 520 coatings were applied to the steel structures in order to provide a high level of protection.
