PPG SIGMAGLIDE 2390 coating clinches top innovation award
PPG Sigmaglide® 2390 offers biocide-free fouling protection, cutting GHG emissions by up to 35% and boosting efficiency with electrostatic application—advancing sustainable marine innovation.
Published 11 July 2025
PPG SIGMAGLIDE® 2390, our innovative biocide-free fouling-release coating, was recently honored for its outstanding sustainably advantaged* attributes that enhance marine vessel performance.
Recognized during a ceremony at the Innovation Research Interchange’s Innovators Summit, PPG Sigmaglide 2390 coating was applauded for its sustainably advantaged attributes that prevent ship hulls from fouling, reduce drag, and improve energy efficiency, which in turn leads to lower greenhouse gas emissions. Designed for electrostatic application, the coating significantly minimizes overspray and waste.
“Protection against fouling is vital for ships, as biofouling increases drag, fuel consumption, and emissions, while also spreading invasive species. Our marine coatings play a key role in preventing fouling, helping to reduce maintenance and ensure regulatory compliance. We’ve made it our mission to lead this space with coatings that combine sustainability and performance.” -Joanna Van Helmond, global product manager, fouling control, Protective and Marine Coatings
PPG Sigmaglide 2390 delivers the following customer benefits:
GHG emissions reduction: Thanks to PPG’s HydroReset Technology™, the coating forms an ultra-smooth surface when immersed in water, delivering up to 20% power savings and up to 35% lower greenhouse gas emissions, helping vessels meet International Maritime Organization regulations.
Environmental protection: Unlike traditional antifoulings that include biocides, PPG Sigmaglide 2390 is completely biocide-free. The coating is 100% silicone-based, providing low surface energy and elasticity to allow marine organisms to be shed naturally during vessel movement, helping to limit spread of invasive species.
Operational efficiency: PPG Sigmaglide 2390 is one of the few marine hull coatings suitable for electrostatic application. Due to the high transfer efficiency from traditional airless spraying, this advanced application technique provides a significant reduction in paint overspray, cutting material waste and improving applicator safety.
PPG Sigmaglide 2390 in combination with electrostatic application exemplifies PPG’s commitment to sustainable innovation, delivering superior performance while supporting maritime regulations. This award highlights our leadership in driving sustainably advantaged solutions that benefit the maritime industry.
*Sustainably advantaged products are defined using PPG's internal methodology that validates product attributes and their contribution towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals. While many of our products have sustainable attributes in their end-use that promote longevity of customer assets, we consider products sustainably advantaged when they contribute to improved environmental outcomes or provide relative improvements over industry benchmarks.
