The global series highlights companies advancing sustainable practices in the maritime industry. PPG’s biocide-free, low-friction coating was recognized for helping shipowners, operators and shipyards improve fuel efficiency, meet environmental regulations and positively support the blue economy.

What sets PPG Sigmaglide 2390 apart is its advanced fouling-release technology. The coating is engineered with a 100% pure silicone binder, creating an ultra-smooth surface that reduces drag, improves fuel efficiency and can help cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to 35%—all without releasing biocides into the ocean.

And it’s not just the product. It’s also how PPG applies it.

In 2023, PPG introduced electrostatic application technology to the shipping industry, leveraging its success in the aerospace and automotive sectors. The process uses electrically charged paint particles that are magnetically attracted to the grounded hull, resulting in a smoother finish, reduced overspray and a cleaner application compared to airless spraying.

PPG Sigmaglide 2390 is one of the few hull coatings compatible with this cutting-edge technique, giving shipowners and shipyards a powerful tool to meet sustainability, efficiency and compliance goals.
